1. Respect the Waves

A strong undertow or large wave can be quite scary, no matter your age or experience. Some areas will restrict entering the water due to dangerous waves, so make sure you always pay attention and choose a beach with manageable waves. If you have young children, try to find a beach with a bay or a cove that offers mellow waves and shallow water, so your little ones can enjoy the water without the danger.

2. Respect the Sun

Another thing to remember when traveling to the Virgin Islands is that the sun here is likely more intense than you are used to. Even if you have a “base tan”, you can still suffer sunburns or sun damage from too much time under the sun’s rays. So, before you head out, make sure you slather your kids and yourself with sunblock. Then, once you’re at the beach, remember to reapply every few hours, especially if you’ve been sweating or swimming in the ocean. Even though St. John is a United States territory, there are different rules for driving here. For example, because we were ruled by Denmark for several years, we drive on the left side of the road. Also, the road can be narrow, mountainous, and serpentine, so it’s important to take your time and drive slow.
